Judge orders surface mine cleanup
A federal judge has ordered Patriot Coal Corp. to spend millions of dollars to clean up selenium pollution at two surface coal mines in West Virginia. Environmental groups said it was the first time a court had demanded restrictions on selenium, a trace mineral commonly discharged from Appalachian surface mines, where the tops of mountains are blown away to expose coal.

Local runners challenge Rocky Mountains
Awesome, but challenging. That's how local ultra-marathoner Juston Wickham, 34, of Cambridge described his trip to the top of one of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains earlier this month. He and his running mate, Mary Kitzig, 53, of Zanesville, also ran 100 miles in a little less than 30 hours during the grueling Leadville Trail 100 on Aug. 21 near Leadville, Colo.
